Smoke filled the streets of Marseille on Saturday as protesters clashed with police during nationwide demonstrations over the cost of living, fuel prices and public services, in a renewed mobilisation by France’s yellow vest movement.
Footage shows demonstrators running through smoke-filled streets near Place Castellane as grenades release thick clouds of smoke and loud bangs ring out. Protesters were seen hurling objects – including bottles – towards advancing police officers, while barricades blocked parts of the road.
Yellow vest activists joined students, unions and other groups in demonstrations across France, bringing together anger over rising living costs with weeks of student protests over underfunded schools and education reforms.
The student unrest has already led to thousands of arrests. France’s justice ministry said 6,877 people were taken into police custody between September 28 and October 8, 86 per cent of them minors.
Prime minister Sebastien Lecornu has acknowledged that young people’s anger “doesn’t come from nowhere”, promising initial measures by the end of October while defending the security forces against accusations of systematic repression.
Saturday’s mobilization has revived memories of the yellow vest movement that erupted in 2018 over fuel taxes before expanding into a wider protest against living costs and economic inequality.
