Palestinian athletes pushed their strength to the limit in Gaza City, pulling trucks, lifting heavy weights and flipping giant tyres in the first-ever ‘strongest man in Palestine’ championship, despite widespread destruction and a severe shortage of sporting resources.

Footage shows competitors battling through a series of gruelling challenges on Al Aghribi Street, dragging a truck, carrying heavy weights and overturning enormous tyres, before winners are crowned in front of cheering spectators. Organisers described the challenges of staging the event after years of hardship and devastating personal losses among Gaza’s athletes.

The championship also drew spectators who saw the event as a powerful symbol of Gaza’s determination to keep its sporting spirit alive.

Organised by the Palestinian federation for physical strength, the championship marked a major milestone for athletes who have struggled to train and compete following years of war and the destruction of sports facilities across the Gaza Strip.

The competition took place against a backdrop of devastating losses for Palestinian sport. According to a March 2 report by the Palestinian football association, 1,007 members of sports federations, clubs, youth and scouting organisations were killed between October 7, 2023, and February 12, 2026, including 962 males and 45 females.
