Indian police detained demonstrators demanding the resignation of India’s chief election commissioner, Ganesh Kumar, over allegations of electoral manipulation during a ‘wave the tricolour’ protest organised by the cockroach Janta Party in New Delhi.

Footage shows officers detaining protesters and escorting them onto buses before driving them away. Protesters carried banners reading ‘save Manipur’ and ‘Jantar Mantar is not a crime,’ alongside demands to withdraw the special intensive revision of electoral rolls, repeal the 2023 law governing the election commission and restore voter lists from January 2025.

Delhi police placed Congress party founder Abhijeet Dipke in preventive detention ahead of Friday’s demonstrations, while officials said around 150 protesters were detained during the unrest.

Over the past week, thousands of protesters, including activists, Bollywood celebrities and opposition figures, have reportedly been detained across India.

At the centre of the dispute is India’s special intensive revision of electoral rolls, an exercise intended to update voter lists and identify ineligible entries.

Critics accuse the election commission of removing eligible voters from the rolls, potentially preventing them from casting their ballots.

The commission rejects allegations of manipulation, saying the revision is intended to remove duplicate registrations, the names of deceased voters, and other ineligible entries.
