A death row inmate in Tennessee, United States, remains unconscious and on a ventilator after surviving an attempted lethal injection.
Fifty-year-old Christa Pike was taken to hospital after officials administered two doses of pentobarbital during an execution attempt at the Riverbend Maximum Security Institution.
Her lawyers say she suffered significant injuries to both arms and is being treated for the effects of the drug.
Media witnesses reported that Pike appeared to remain alive after the first dose and could be heard breathing and snoring after the drugs were administered.
The Tennessee Department of Correction, however, said it followed the state’s approved execution protocol.
Following the incident, Governor Bill Lee ordered a third-party review and halted the state’s next scheduled execution.
Pike’s lawyers are seeking to preserve evidence from the failed execution and have called for her death sentence to be commuted.
Pike was sentenced to death for the 1995 murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer, whom she killed when she was 18.
