As the world marks World Press Freedom Day 2026, the Nigeria Union of Journalists,Edo State Council has called for stronger protection of journalists and respect for media freedom in Nigeria.
In a statement jointly signed by the state Chairman Festus Alenkhe and Secretary Andy Egbon, the Union highlighted the importance of a free press to democracy and human rights, while commending journalists for their resilience despite intimidation, economic hardship, and digital threats.
The NUJ condemned harassment, arbitrary arrests, and cyberbullying of media professionals, stressing that journalism is not a crime.
It called on government and security agencies to ensure the safety of journalists, especially those covering sensitive assignments, and urged public institutions to comply with the Freedom of Information Act.
The Union also appealed for improved welfare for journalists and reaffirmed its commitment to a free and independent press, warning that when journalists are silenced, society suffers.
