Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, says the Supreme Court handled two thousand, four hundred and fifty-six matters and delivered four hundred and eleven judgments during the 2025/2026 legal year.
She disclosed this at the opening of the 2026/2027 legal year in Abuja, noting an increase in the court’s workload compared with the preceding year.
The cases included civil and criminal motions, appeals, political disputes and Sharia-related matters.
Justice Kekere-Ekun also disclosed that 733 older cases had been scheduled for hearing as part of efforts to reduce the backlog of pending cases.
She called for improved case management and warned lawyers against forum shopping, saying the practice could lead to conflicting court orders and undermine public confidence in the judiciary.
