Operations across Nigeria’s federal universities and inter-university centres are facing major disruption as non-academic staff begin a nationwide strike on Friday.

The Joint Action Committee of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities has confirmed that the industrial action commenced at midnight on May 1, 2026.

In a letter dated April 30 and addressed to the Minister of Education, the unions said the decision follows the Federal Government’s failure to conclude ongoing renegotiations and present a new offer on allowances.

The letter, jointly signed by NASU General Secretary Peters Adeyemi and SSANU President Mohammed Ibrahim, warns that the strike could significantly affect administrative and support services across federal tertiary institutions.

Students and academic activities are expected to feel the impact, as key non-teaching operations come to a halt nationwide.
