Nineteen prospective National Youth Service Corps members travelling from Ibadan to their orientation camps have been abducted along the Owerri-Onitsha Road in Imo State.
The victims were travelling in two buses when gunmen reportedly attacked them on Thursday and took them into a nearby bush.
The abductors have reportedly demanded N50 million for each victim, amounting to N950 million, heightening anxiety among the affected families.
The drivers reportedly escaped and alerted security personnel, prompting a coordinated search for the victims.
The Imo State Police Command said ten victims were rescued, although it did not confirm whether they were among the abducted corps members.
The Oyo State Government has condemned the incident and said it is working with security agencies, the Imo State Government and NYSC authorities to secure the victims’ release.
The latest incident has renewed concerns over the safety of prospective corps members travelling across states for orientation camps.
