Canadian prime minister Mark Carney warned on Friday that forces outside the country were seeking to break up Canada, delivering a defiant speech at a ‘forever Canadian’ rally.

US President Donald Trump has repeatedly floated making Canada America’s 51st state and imposed tariffs on Canadian goods.

Trump’s former adviser Elon Musk has also weighed in, calling for Quebec, Alberta and Saskatchewan to break away from Canada earlier this month. The premiers of Alberta and Saskatchewan rejected his comments.

As Carney reminded supporters to vote, someone in the crowd shouted, “already voted!”

With advance voting already underway, Albertans have until Monday, October 19, to decide whether the province should remain in Canada or begin the legal process towards a future referendum on independence.
