A historic night for Nigerian football! The Under-17 Women’s National Team, the Flamingos, have sent shockwaves through the world of football by defeating defending champions North Korea 3-1 to qualify for the Round of 16 at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco.
Head coach Akeem Busari’s girls walked into the Mohammed VI Football Complex as underdogs, but they played like true champions.
The breakthrough came early in the 15th minute when Oluwakemi Adegbuyi found the back of the net to put Nigeria ahead. The Flamingos kept their feet on the gas, and in the 38th minute, Oluebube Umejiaku doubled the lead after a brilliant setup by Tosin Rafiu, leaving the holders stunned at halftime.
Any hopes of a North Korean comeback were completely dashed in the 56th minute. Player of the Match Kanyinsola Yusuf stepped up and buried a spectacular free-kick into the top corner, making it three-nil.
North Korea managed a late consolation goal from the penalty spot through Yu Jong Hyang in the 82nd minute, but Nigeria’s defence held firm until the final whistle.
With this massive three-one victory, Nigeria finishes second in Group B with six points, qualifying for the knockout rounds right alongside North Korea.
An incredible bounce-back for the Flamingos after their opening tournament hiccup! They will now face the runner-up of Group F in the Round of 16 on Thursday, 29 October 2026.
