The Congress of Edo Movie Practitioners, an umbrella body comprising recognized guilds and professional associations within the motion picture industry in Edo State, hereby issues this formal statement regarding the unfortunate incident involving Dr Pedro Osaro Agbonifo-Obaseki in Benin City, Edo State.
In a statement, the Congress said after careful review of reports and official statements relating to the assault, humiliation, and public debasement of Dr. Pedro Obaseki at the football field of Uwa Primary School, Benin City, resolved to unequivocally condemn the incident in the strongest possible terms and call for a comprehensive, impartial, and transparent investigation, with a view to ensuring that all individuals responsible are identified and brought to justice in accordance with the law.
The statement said Dr. Pedro Agbonifo-Obaseki is a pioneering figure in the Nigerian film industry and a distinguished cultural ambassador who has, for over three and a half decades, contributed significantly to the promotion and preservation of Edo cultural heritage through theatre, film, and scholarly storytelling, stressing that his work has played a vital role in projecting the Edo identity locally and internationally.
The statement added that as such, he is deserving of dignity, respect, and lawful protection at all times.
The Congress expresses profound concern and deep disappointment that such an incident could occur within Edo State, particularly involving an Edo son on his ancestral soil.
In light of the foregoing, the Congress respectfully calls on the Commissioner of Police and the Executive Governor of Edo State, Senator Monday Okpebholo, to use their esteemed offices to ensure that justice is served and that the rule of law prevails.
