The Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, has warned telecom operators in the country to improve service delivery or face regulatory sanctions.

The warning follows persistent complaints from subscribers over poor network quality, particularly during the Yuletide season.

To underscore its position, the commission released a data-driven report developed in partnership with Ookla, a global network intelligence and performance measurement firm, assessing the performance of telecom operators across the country.

The NCC cautioned operators with performance deficits to prioritise investment in network stability, particularly in reducing latency and jitter, to meet growing subscriber demands.

According to the report, latency and jitter issues are negatively affecting the Globacom network, resulting in poor user experience, especially for real-time applications such as video calls and online payments.

The report noted that network performance in Nigeria is increasingly polarised, with some operators recording significant improvements, while others continue to struggle with consistency.

The NCC stated that the partnership with Ookla reflects a deliberate shift towards data-driven regulation, with the quarterly report aimed at empowering consumers to make informed choices based on independent analytics.
