John Stapleton, a pioneering broadcaster known for shows like BBC’s Watchdog and GMTV’s News Hour, has died.
Former Good Morning Britain presenter Charlotte Hawkins called him a brilliant broadcaster and a genuinely lovely man.
Stapleton began at local papers before joining BBC’s Nationwide in 1975 and then Newsnight in 1980, reporting on the Falklands War.
He moved to ITV in 1983 to launch TV-am and later returned to BBC to co-host Watchdog with his wife, Lynn Faulds Wood.
Faulds Wood died in 2020; Stapleton revealed his Parkinson’s diagnosis four years ago.
His son Nick called him loving and generous.
Stapleton challenged his Parkinson’s symptoms by singing for charity.
