Edo State Police Command says it has observed a disturbing crime trend involving anonymous callers threatening individuals, business owners, and corporate organizations in the State, with claims that explosive devices have been planted within their premises.
The Command described the act as a new wave of extortion through fear and intimidation, where the perpetrators demand money, threatening to detonate the alleged explosives if their financial requests are not met.
Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eno Ikoedem, who issued the statement on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, said the Command is already investigating reported cases and has taken proactive measures to ensure public safety.
It advised members of the public not to panic or succumb to such threats, as the Command boasts of a competent Explosive Ordnance Department, capable of detecting and deactivating any form of explosive device and is also working closely with telecommunication service providers and relevant security agencies to track and apprehend those behind these criminal acts.
It urge residents to immediately report such calls or messages to the nearest police station or through the Command’s control room numbers — 08077773721 and 08037646272.
