Edo State Police Command has confirmed incidents of unrest at political activities organised by the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Benin City on Tuesday.
According to the Police, the disturbance occurred at the ADC State Secretariat located at Ogbelaka Street, off Sapele Road, where hoodlums allegedly infiltrated the gathering shortly after the programme had ended and most dignitaries had left. The miscreants reportedly caused panic, chased attendees away, and vandalised chairs and canopies arranged outside the venue.
Police patrol teams responded promptly to a distress call, but the suspects fled on sighting operatives. No casualty was recorded at the scene.
However, during the ensuing stampede, a woman sustained injuries not related to gunfire.
She was treated at a nearby chemist and later discharged.
Security has since been reinforced around the secretariat and its environs to prevent any further breakdown of law and order.
In a related incident, the Command said it received another distress report alleging that gunshots were heard at the residence of the ADC National Leader and a former Edo State Governor, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun.
On arrival, Police operatives observed signs of malicious damage, including shattered rear windscreens and damage to parts of vehicles parked outside the residence.
No casualty was recorded.
The Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, has ordered a full-scale investigation to identify, apprehend, and prosecute those responsible.
