Gishiri Demolition: Babanbola Miscreants In Stealing Spree, Carts Away FCTA’s Bulldozers’ Batteries
Victims of demolition exercises in the FCT usually engage in wailing and accusation of the FCT Administration’s (FCTA) authorities of high handedness and insensitivity. It was a different story when the FCTA demolition squad returned to Gishiri, a densely populated slum contiguous to highbrow Maitama District, in the heart of Abuja. The return of the FCT Administration’s Task Force to Gishiri Community to continue its clean up exercise, meant different things to different people. To some of the victims, it was a bittersweet relief as they themselves described this area as a den of thieves, to some it was tears and just like an irony, the babanbola boys are feeling on top of the world, carting away ruins from the demolition. Not all them were lucky though, as the Senior Special Assistant to the FCT Minister on Monitoring, Inspection and Enforcement, Ikharo Attah, confirmed that some of the babanbola boys were arrested for stealing people’s properties. The FCTA’s Department of Development Control has been marking this area for over 15 years.
