The Acting Chairman of Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area, Hon. Eric Sino Osawaru, has reaffirmed the full enforcement of the ban on open grazing across the Local Government Area, effective January 3rd, 2026. He stressed that the decision is non-negotiable, as it is aimed at ensuring public safety, protecting food security, and promoting peaceful coexistence among residents.

The Chairman explained that the reaffirmation followed extensive consultations with key stakeholders, including leaders of cattle dealers’ associations, traditional rulers, and security agencies. He noted that while the council carefully considered appeals and concerns from stakeholders in the cattle industry, the government’s primary responsibility to safeguard lives, farmlands, and property must take precedence.

Hon. Osawaru further emphasized that the ban is in line with Governor Monday Okpebholo’s SHINE Agenda, particularly its focus on security, harmony, and institutional effectiveness. He also aligned the policy with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s national drive toward structured cattle ranching and modern agricultural practices. According to him, open grazing has contributed significantly to recurring conflicts and insecurity, which the council is determined to eliminate.

The Acting Chairman disclosed that enforcement of the ban will be carried out in collaboration with security agencies and local vigilante groups. He added that plans for designated ranching areas, as well as the biometric registration of cattle and their owners, are ongoing. Hon. Osawaru urged residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with authorities as Ikpoba-Okha continues its drive toward peace, security, and inclusive development.
