The governor of Benue State, Hyacinth Alia, has declared that the state is under siege from terrorists and bandits, saying that the recent attacks that have claimed several lives are beyond a herders-farmers clash.

Governor Alia said the way the attacks come and the intel received, it is a directed, calibrated plan and then executed.

The governor insisted that he no longer viewed the attacks as a clash between farmers and herders, stating that they now involved specialised killers—terrorists who engage in a form of guerrilla warfare.

He said in recent weeks alone, 33 people were killed in fresh attacks, while the state previously lost 73 persons in coordinated assaults across Katsina-Ala, Ukum, and Logo local government areas.

According to him, the food crisis is already looming, as farming activities in major food-producing areas like Sankera have been disrupted, He also disclosed that there are currently 17 IDPs camps in the state, while many displaced persons now live with relatives in overcrowded homes.

There has been a surge in attacks in the North-Central state in recent weeks, with several local government areas experiencing violent onslaughts that have claimed numerous lives.
