Jonathan Calls on UN to Tighten Actions Against Terrorists

Nigeria’s President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday in Abuja urged the United Nations not to treat terrorism as a local issue but as a common challenge against the globe.

The President made the call at a cocktail he organised in honour of participants at the regional conference on counter-terrorism in Abuja. He called on the UN to come out stronger against terrorists and treat them as world’s common enemies.

Jonathan said terrorism is a menace to everyone and the whole world and urged the United Nations to come together and see terrorists as common enemies to all. He said “those who throw explosives at people are not mentally-deranged. There is no justification for this act. The earlier the world comes together to confront it, the better for all of us”.

President Jonathan also said the United Nations should no longer treat terror as a local issue as people must be able to live and travel freely without fear of being attacked or falling victims of terrorist attack. He also expressed concern over the free movement of small arms and weapons across international borders.

Jonathan who enjoined the UN to take a position against those who manufacture the lethal weapons being used by the terrors to perpetrate evil on innocent citizens, while attributing the spate of armed robbery, rape and other crimes to the presence of small arms in the hands of non-state actors. “We call on the UN to come out strong on existing treaties that are against the movement of small arms,” the president said.

Earlier, the National Security Adviser, Mr Sambo Dasuki, had observed that the security situation in the country was improving due to pro-active measures taken by government.
