In a bid to showcase the rich cultural heritage of the Benin Kingdom and preserve its traditions, norms, and values, especially regarding the looting of Benin artefacts by the British in 1897, a symbolic mask was created to tell the story titled “Mother Deity Iyagbon Bokhian.”
According to the convener of the project, the essence of the initiative is to symbolically reverse what happened in 1897 by placing the mask in museums, just as the artefacts were taken, and transforming it into a ritual object that speaks to history and restitution.
