The Jigawa State government says it has, in the last two years, empowered over 250,000 farmers across the state’s 27 Local Government Areas with subsidised agricultural inputs.
With a large population of farmers, Jigawa State is one of the leading producers of various crops, including rice, wheat, sesame, and hibiscus, among others.
Record from the National Bureau of Statistics shows that agriculture remains the backbone of Jigawa’s economy.
According to the Technical Adviser to the Governor on Agriculture, Dr. Saifullahi Umar, the support has been a game-changer for farmers in the state, cutting across all types of farming, including dry-season and rain-season farming.
He explained that the government’s initiative has also covered various crops such as rice, wheat, and sesame.
The Technical Adviser attributed the success of the programme to the government’s enabling environment and policies, saying that The government has earmarked billions of naira to support farmers and improve agriculture, the main source of livelihood for citizens in the state.
