The Government of Edo State has debunked speculations making waves that the Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has threatened the Labour Party Presidential Candidate in the last Election, Mr. Peter Obi, who recently visited the State without due notice to the Government.
A statement by Mr. Fred Itua, the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Monday Okpebholo, explained that the Governor did not issue any form of threats to Mr. Peter Obi but rather emphasized the need for high-profile individuals, particularly politically exposed persons, to notify and seek security clearance from the Office of the State Government, which is the normal thing to do before embarking on any public engagements within the State.
The statement said Governor Okpebholo, as the Chief Security Officer of Edo State, has the constitutional responsibility to protect and safeguard lives and properties of all and visitors alike.
The statement adds that the duty of the Governor regarding security includes ensuring that adequate security measures are put in place during high-profile visits or events that may attract large crowds or media attention.
The statement observed that when protocols are breached or ignored, especially during high profile visits, such negligence creates serious security vulnerabilities not only for the visitor but also for citizens who may be caught in avoidable threats.
The statement further noted that Governor Okpebholo’s position is particularly relevant in light of the rising attacks and abductions of religious leaders, especially Catholic priests and Christian clerics, noting that his concerns should not be twisted for political mileage by individuals seeking to score cheap points.
The statement emphasized that the State Government will not fold its arms and allow politically motivated activities to endanger lives, urging leaders no matter how highly placed to align with the protocols and security realities of the areas they visit.
