The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has denounced what it called a duplicitous and unauthorized circular purportedly issued by an individual claiming to be the Acting State Secretary of the NLC Edo State Council, directing workers to attend a Governor’s parade on May 1st, 2025.
The NLC in a Statement signed by the National Deputy General Secretary Comrade Ismail Bello explained categorically that the Councils earlier directive issued on the twenty second of April 2025 remains valid to the effect that Affiliates of the Congress in Edo State are to commemorate the 2025 May Day independently in their respective union offices, in line with Congress’s efforts to resolve the ongoing crisis in the state council.
The Statement adds that NLC has no official position known as Acting State Secretary in Edo adding that the individual behind the circular is an impostor, while his motives are highly questionable.
The Union urged workers and the public to disregard the fraudulent document as the Author clearly neither works for the NLC or for the workers.
NLC reiterates that Comrade Bernard Joman Egwakhide is not known in any of their statutes or records as the Chairman of NLC in Edo state explaining that when there is a change in the components of NLC’s Edo state council leadership, members of the Public and social partners would be informed accordingly.
The Congress remarks that May Day is a workers’ celebration, not a government’s event noting that no worker is under any compulsion to attend any government-organized parade insisting that Threats of sanctions for non-attendance are null, void and a blatant unacceptable intimidation tactic.
NLC observed that Trade unions are independent organizations that function in line with the dictates of their rules free from any external interference while the Congress will take all measures to defend its independence and stand firmly with workers of Edo State unconditionally.
The NLC reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the Edo State Council of the NLC led by Comrade Odion Olaye
