The Directors Guild of Nigeria has unequivocally condemned the act of brutality against Dr. Don Pedro Obaseki on Sunday in Benin City.
According to a statement by the organization, Dr. Don Pedro Obaseki is not only a long-standing member of the Directors Guild of Nigeria but also a pioneer Nigerian filmmaker who has, for decades, used film and culture to promote identity, dialogue, and national pride.
The statement added that no individual—regardless of status, belief, or perceived cultural transgression—deserves to be subjected to mob violence, physical assault, or public degradation and stressed that while the Guild respects Nigeria’s rich traditional institutions and cultural heritage, no cultural interpretation or grievance can justify violence, humiliation, or the suspension of a citizen’s fundamental human rights.
They called for a thorough and transparent investigation into the incident, full accountability for all individuals involved in the assault and unlawful treatment.
