The Ondo State Police Command says it has arrested a 62-year-old man over allegations of raping a 12-year-old girl in the Akure area of the state.

In a statement issued by the command’s Public Relations Officer, Abayomi Jimoh, the incident occurred on Tuesday, according to one Sefunmi Adebayo who reported to the police that her daughter was allegedly defiled by one Mathew Imeje at Ehin Ala, Akure, the state capital.

Jimoh said preliminary investigation allegedly revealed that the suspect lured the minor into a bush under the pretence of helping her.

The suspect is said to be in custody, awaiting prosecution.

He reiterated the command’s commitment to protecting the rights of rape victims and to ensuring that sexual violators face the wrath of the law.

He urged all residents to remain vigilant and continue to provide credible and actionable information to the police for swift intervention.
