A Russian military general has been killed in a car bombing in Moscow, authorities have confirmed.
Russia’s Investigative Committee said Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov died on Monday morning after an explosive device planted under a vehicle detonated in a residential area of the capital.
Sarvarov, aged 56, was the head of the armed forces’ operational training department.
Investigators said one of the theories being explored is possible involvement of Ukrainian intelligence services, though Ukraine has not commented.
Images from the scene show a badly damaged vehicle in a car park near an apartment block.
The attack adds to a series of targeted killings of Russian military officials since the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
