Bayelsa State Government has confirmed the death of Deputy Governor Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo and declared a three-day state mourning in his honour beginning and has directed that all flags be flown at half-mast.
In a statement issued and signed by Bayelsa State Commissioner for Information, Orientation and Strategy, Ebiuwou Koku-Obiyai, the government described Ewhrudjakpo’s death as one that came with deep regret and profound shock.
The statement added that the Deputy Governor collapsed while proceeding to a scheduled meeting within his office and was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa, where he was later confirmed dead.
Ewhrudjakpo served as Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State under Governor Douye Diri from 2020 until his death.
He was first selected as Douye Diri’s running mate in the November 2019 Bayelsa State governorship election and was retained in the position when the duo were reelected in 2023.
