At least ten unlicensed traditional medicine practitioners have been arrested and charged to court in Cross River State following a petition by the Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, over alleged illegal activities in Calabar, the state capital.
It will be recalled that the Cross River State branch of the NMA had earlier written to the state governor, Senator Prince Bassey Otu; the Commissioner for Health, Dr Egbe Ayuk; and the Commissioner of Police, Rasheed Afegbua, over the illegal operations of a group conducting so-called traditional medical trade fairs at the headquarters of the Calabar Municipal Council.
The association raised concerns that the activities of the operators could worsen health challenges for unsuspecting and vulnerable residents, who are allegedly persuaded to patronise uncertified products without approval from the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC.
In a statement issued on Monday in Calabar and signed by the state Chairman, Dr Ezoke Epoke, and the Secretary, Dr Akanimo Ekeruke, the NMA commended Governor Bassey Otu for his swift intervention, describing it as a proactive step towards safeguarding public health and residents’ wellbeing.
