The recent ban on Activities of Okhaighele by Government of Edo State has been Commended by Respondents in Benin who described the action as the right step in the right direction
Assenting to the Bill on the amendment of Private Property Protection law of 2017 into the New Edo State private property protection law 2021 Governor of Edo State Mr. Godwin Obaseki said the law will among other ban not only the Community Development Association (CDA) but also all sort of splinter groups like Okaigele or people who have come up to forcefully take other people’s landed properties in their communities.
The Governor further said that the committee earlier constituted to look into violators will be reconstituted to make it more functional and proactive to prosecute offenders as a special court will also be set up.
Against this backdrop Barrister Godwin Oaikhhena welcomed the new Law as according to him the illegal activities of Okhaigheles were becoming embarrassing to the state.
He said though the Benin custom and tradition recognize some traditional positions in the administration of affairs of communities, curtailing their overbearing excesses lies in the powers of Government.
Another Benin-based Legal Practitioner and Notary Public of Nigeria, Barrister Ebosele Okhifo said the Governor has done well but said there should be a workable body to monitor the situation otherwise they will continue to operate with another new name.
A Benin-based Estate developer Cyril Omoregie while applauding the decision of the Edo state governors whom he said meant well for the people however said the state government should see how the Okhaighele can be accommodated into the scheme of things in other not to make them redundant.
Stakeholders are watching to see the effectiveness of the law and how a common man will benefit from its enforcement.
