The police in Sokoto have confirmed that 10 people lost their lives in a boat accident in the Sabon Birni Local Government Area of the state.
The victims were said to be fleeing from an impending attack by bandits in Zalla Bango, a remote village in the council, when the incident occurred.
Though officials of the national and state emergency management agencies have yet to comment on the accident, the spokesman of Sokoto State Police Command, DSP Ahmed Rufai, confirmed that the residents drowned.
Chairman of Sabon Birni Local Government Area, Alhaji Ayuba Hashimu, said that efforts were ongoing to determine the exact number of victims.
